Coastal Vibes Playlist No. 3 // by Sam Santos // cover art credits to UO
Awesummer is our first playlist of summer! This playlist isn’t exactly the beachpunk/chillwave kind of summer mix, but more of a bum around and lie down but dance once in a while kind of mix. I tried staying away from making the mix too typically beachy so I blended a couple of genres together. For me, summer is about being free and being able to do whatever you want even if it means lying down and doing nothing. With that, I tried to divide the mix with tunes for being lazy, shakin’ your shoulders, and fulfilling those summer adventures of yours. Also, a good amount of these artists are new with only a few songs/EPs or have only released one album or just recently released an album. So it’s more convenient for you to check the newer artists, I linked their names to their soundcloud. Enjoy and let me know what you think!

01. I Know It’s You by Guards / 02. Dying To Start Again by Lovelife / 03. Royals by Lorde / 04. Oceans by Coasts / 05. Harlem by New Politics / 06. Huddle by Kisses / 07. Love You More by CITIZENS! / 08. LAX by JJAMZ / 09. A Summer Thing by Cayucas / 10. Take My Hand By Charli XCX / 11. Cardiac Arrest by Bad Suns / 12. Wildest Moments by Jessie Ware / 13. Lose My Mind by Pacific Air/ 14. Pilgrim by MØ / 15. Time to Run by Lord Huron / 16. Wraith by Peace / 17. All The Days by HAERTS / 18. At Least I Have Nothing by Saint Motel / 19. Weird Shapes by Surfer Blood / 20. The Chief by Wildcat! Wildcat! / 21. From Nothing by Dan Croll

Just Desserts by Marina & The Diamonds and Charli XCX

We’ve always been a fan of Marina and the Diamonds but once Charli XCX released True Romance, we’ve been keeping an eye out for her as well. This track perfectly combines Marina’s bubblegum pop style with Charli’s synth-pop. Sometimes, it’s hard to distinguish the vocals but we’ve figured that Charli talk-sings often……We love it.

And since we’re seeing these two this Saturday, May 11th at the Shrine, we’ve made them artists of the week!

The Bling Ring (2013) directed by Sofia Coppola

Starring // Katie Chang, Israel Broussard, Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga

Release Date // June 14, 2013

Although this seems quite different from Sofia Coppola’s past films (i.e. The Virgin Suicides, Marie Antoinette, Lost In Translation, Somewhere), we’re still beyond excited. From the second we heard 212 by Azealia Banks playing in the trailer, we knew we would love this movie.

BEST NEW ALBUMS // The Strokes, Wavves, Peace, The Virgins

Put your judgement of their older albums aside (besides Peace, considering this is their first album) and I swear, you’ll love the new ones. I think everyone has been too worried with comparing them to the past albums and just not enjoying the quality of the individual albums. Let’s start with The Strokes. Comedown Machine is a beautiful album, I swear it. It’s not the old Strokes but with that thought aside (and even with), I don’t see how it’s so hard to enjoy it. Secondly, Wavves’ Afraid of Heights. Maybe it’s Nathan Williams’ natural beach-punk voice that makes the sound even truer to California but I think the sound of this album is definitely solid. Thirdly, Peace caught my attention on my first time hearing Follow Baby and how ridiculously trippy that music video was (I really enjoyed it). Needless to say, I highly anticipated their new album In Love because I just knew that it was gonna be good. And I thought right! They sort of remind me of Wavves meets Two Door Cinema Club but that’s just a personal thought. Check ‘em out though, I predict great things for them. Last but not least, The Virgins’ Strike Gently. This album is just really mellow yet fun. Definitely a shake your shoulders and tap your foot kind of fun.

Just for first-time listeners, I picked out a few songs from each album that can possibly give you your favorite new band.

Comedown Machine

  • One Way Trigger - so beautifully sang. Kudos, Jules.
  • Welcome To Japan - one of their funner songs. I can’t help but dance every time.
  • Tap Out - a foot tapping song. Hence, “Tap Out” (just kidding, I really doubt that it’s titled that because of that reason)

Afraid Of Heights

  • Afraid Of Heights - I picked this one not because it was a single, but I just always enjoy the harmonies.
  • Paranoid - If you’re looking for a quick song to give you a small overview of the album, Paranoid is a good song to start with. It’s fun and definitely gets me feeling like I need to run all over the place.
  • Lounge Forward - I think this is one of my favorite songs in the album, I think I just love Nathan’s voice most in this one.

In Love:

  • Higher Than The Sun - this is a great song to start with because it was love at first listen
  • Bloodshake - because it’s a great song to end with…
  • California Daze - a slower song of theirs, but imagining how this would sound live gets me excited.

Strike Gently:

  • Impressions of You - This song is just, for a lack of better words, adorable?? I don’t know. It’s soft, pleasant, and I wish they played it live when I saw them.
  • Prima Materia - Although it’s not the same band besides Donald (the lead singer), I’ve always admired the instruments. The sound is always crisp and smooth, I’ve noticed especially in this song.
  • Figure On The Ice - The guitar riffs are absolutely sick in this. Makes me nostalgic for some reason.

(note - I am not a The Strokes, Wavves, Peace, or The Virgins expert or huge fanatic so apologies if my opinion might’ve possibly offended some older/bigger fans! I’m just trying to share some good tunes not really review the albums)

MUSIC VIDEO // “Work” by Iggy Azalea, premiered on March 13, 2013

I swear, I watched this with my jaw dropped the entire time. If you’re a fan of killer dance moves and songs that make you wanna get up and start shaking that tush, I would highly recommend this video for you. This Aussie babe, Iggy Azalea recently opened for UK popstar, Rita Ora and ever since she has been climbing her way up right next to another favorite female lyricist of ours, Azealia Banks. Keep your eyes peeled for her upcoming debut album, The New Classic releasing later this year.

FILM REVIEWS /  Spring Breakers directed by Harmony Korine
Spring Break forever… Let’s face it: this movie was everywhere before it even came out. But what’s the hype going towards? Other than James Franco with corn rows and the four totally hot girls run wild in a party movie (who doesn’t love a party movie?).
Summary: Four college girls: Faith (Selena Gomez), Candy (Vanessa Hudgens), Brit (Ashley Benson), and Cotty (Rachel Korine) decide to go on spring break, but the only problem is that lack of money they have. With a little over three hundred dollars saved up among the four of them, the girls decide to rob a store, the Pig Shack, with only water guns and a hammer. Afterward, the action starts to begin until they are arrested during a party. The girls are later bailed out of jail by a drug-dealing rapper, Alien (James Franco), who turns their spring break from a week of being under the influence to a violent and sex-crazed adventure.
Review: While the film had slow moments, it never failed to keep me entertained, from Gomez smoking out of a bong to Franco playing ‘Everytime’ by Britney Spears on the piano. Although the movie contained disturbing and raunchy moments, its somewhat genius approach made it easily one of the best teen-dramadies I’ve seen in a while. Spring Breakers is bound to be a cult classic as the years go by. It’s a film I highly recommend…if you can handle it.
